Understanding God’s character can transform how we approach Him in prayer. I was chatting with a friend the other day about the character of God, and one thing she said that really stuck with me was that God is a gentleman. He’s not going to deal with us harshly but gently and with kindness. If we apply that truth to prayer, it means that when we speak to Him, He is not going to be rude or give us the cold shoulder. He will not ignore us or give us the silent treatment.
God is not One who will ignore the prayers of His people. All throughout the Psalms, we hear the writers talk about praying to God and God responding back to them.
- Psalm 120:1 says, “In my distress I called to the Lord, and he answered me.” (ESV)
- Psalm 34:4 says, “I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.” (ESV)
- Psalm 3:4 says, “I cried aloud to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy hill. Selah” (ESV)
When we are drowning in stress, fear, and hurt God still hears our prayers. When He feels silent we can always trust His character. He is a God who hears and answers.
Pray: Heavenly Father, thank You for always hearing our prayers and responding with kindness and gentleness. Help us to recognize Your voice and to cultivate ears that hear You clearly. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Reflect: How can you become more attentive to recognizing God’s voice in your daily life?
