When Joshua was called to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land, God told Joshua not to be afraid and to be courageous. God says to Joshua:
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9 ESV)
God’s call to not be afraid was not a suggestion; it was a command. But God did not stop at the command; He followed it with a promise to be with Joshua every step of the way. Joshua’s courage was not to be rooted in his self, his abilities, or in the idea that everything would go perfect (because it wouldn’t). His courage was to be founded on the truth that the God of the universe would be by His side every step of the way. Today, I encourage you to let God give you the courage to press forward when you are afraid.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, when I am afraid, thank you for always being with me. When I am afraid, help me to lean on You for courage, strength, and fortitude. In Jesus’ name, amen.
