July 29 • The Practice of Contentment

Contentment is not a natural character trait that only some people have, but instead a learned practice. You get to choose joy. The point of practicing a discipline is to get better each step, each try. It means to keep at it to make progress. The Apostle Paul wrote:

“I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” (Philippians‬ ‭4‬:‭11‬-‭13‬ ‭NIV‬‬)

Paul wasn’t content because he had a naturally happy disposition, but because he had a LOT of practice. The same is true for us. Each situation we face is an opportunity to practice contentment. To choose to trust God or worry, to have peace or fear, joy or anxiety, hope or despair. We won’t be perfect, but we make progress when we practice and it’s then that God’s strength becomes available to help us do all things. Today, I encourage you to choose to the practice of contentment.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, Despite what season I am in, help me to be content in You. When I want to complain over my circumstances, give me the discipline to focus on Your continued goodness. In Jesus’ name, amen.
