I love when the Scriptures reveal the deeper truth of a matter. David may not have known why the king of Israel, who was also his father-in-law, hated him. He was probably very confused when Saul attempted to take his life by throwing a spear at him a few verses up (1 Samuel 18:11). But we know from today’s verse that Saul’s anger and violence toward David was really just a cover for his fear of David. 1 Samuel 18:28-29 tells us:
“But when Saul saw and knew that the Lord was with David, and that Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved him, Saul was even more afraid of David. So, Saul was David’s enemy continually.” (1 Samuel 18:28-29 ESV)
It’s unfortunate, but there will be people we meet that will be intimidated by all God is doing in our lives. This may come across as anger, resentment, and hostility toward you. But their negative reaction says more about them that it does you.
It’s enough that we have to battle with our own fear. We don’t have time to worry about someone else’s misguided fear of us. In situations like this, I encourage you to pray for them and quickly give the situation to God.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for your blessings in my life. May I stay focused on You, and not get distracted by negativity. In Jesus Christ’s name, I pray, Amen.
