What will suffocate your passion for God more than anything? Idols. Now, don’t assume idols are only the golden calves we read about in the Bible. We still have idols today. They just look different.

An idol is anything or anybody we place before God. An idol is anything we place our faith in other than Jesus. An idol can even be something good, like ambition, marriage, education, career, or a house. These things aren’t bad in and of themselves, but we make them idols when we put our hope in them. Idols take up space in our hearts only meant for God. Matthew 22:37 says:

“And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37 ESV)

Idols prevent us from loving God with our all. Idols don’t simply exist; they are made. We get rid of them by starving them. If you’ve made an idol out of the TV, then stop watching it. If you’ve made an idol out of social media, then log off. This won’t be easy because you’ll have to fight the itch to go back. This is why asking for accountability from a trusted girlfriend is a must.

I encourage you to do whatever you need to do to stop feeding those idols with your attention and devotion. Starve your idols and make more space in your heart for God.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for your love and devotion to me. Please help me to recognize any idols in my life and grant me the strength to let them go so that I may love you more. In Jesus Christ’s name, I pray, Amen.
