The Bible has a lot to say about how we use our words because words are powerful. Hateful speech can shut down, bitter words can destroy, gossip is unloving, and complaining can cause loss of perspective. Philippians 2:14-15 tells us:
“Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.” (Philippians 2:14-15 ESV)
When you complain, you look no different from the world. Complaining is easy, but God calls believers to a higher standard when it comes to how we use our mouths. We should use our words to be thankful and to build up, not tear down. Complaining tears down because it only focuses on the negative which prevents us from being thankful. You cannot complain and be grateful at the same time. So, I encourage you today to choose your words wisely and speak right so that you can shine bright.
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for reminding me the importance of continually giving You thanks and praise with my words. Forgive me for times when my complaining outweighs my gratefulness. When I give You praise, it renews my mind, uplifts my spirit, and keeps me connected to You. In Jesus’ name, amen
