Confidence is something we all want—confidence in our purpose, our gifts, our identity. But for so many women, it’s also something that feels just out of reach. One reason for this is that we’ve confused confidence with pride—and that confusion is keeping us stuck.
A lot of us believe that being confident means appearing better than others, having it all together, or always being in control. But the truth is, pride and confidence are not the same. Pride actually works against real confidence. It keeps us obsessed with ourselves—how we look, how we’re perceived, whether we’re measuring up. And that kind of thinking always leaves us feeling more insecure, not less.
True confidence comes from humility—and humility doesn’t mean thinking negatively about yourself. It simply means you’re not always thinking about yourself. You’re not consumed by comparison, performance, or the need for validation. And that shift is powerful. James 4:6 says:
“But he gives more grace. Therefore, it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (ESV)
We often live in our heads, worrying about what others are thinking of us. But most people aren’t thinking about us at all—they’re thinking about themselves. And that’s the irony: the more we try to appear confident by focusing on ourselves, the more we lose it.
The beauty of humility is that it breaks this cycle. It frees us from the trap of overthinking, people-pleasing, and striving for approval. Whether prideful or insecure, both keep us stuck in self-focus—and that’s the real barrier to confidence.
But when we lift our eyes from ourselves and fix them on God—on who He is and what He’s done—we step into a confidence that’s unshakable. Not because we’re perfect, but because we’re grounded in Someone greater than us.
Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, help me release the pressure to prove myself. Teach me what it means to walk in true humility—not low self-esteem, but freedom from self-focus. Let my confidence come from who You are, and not who I’m trying to be. In Jesus’ Name, I pray, Amen.
