If you’ve ever hesitated to speak up, follow through, or say yes to what God asked you to do because you were afraid of how someone might respond—you’re not alone. Whether it’s the fear of judgment, rejection, or simply disappointing people, that kind of fear can quietly creep in and keep us stuck in a cycle of people-pleasing.
When God called the prophet Jeremiah, He knew Jeremiah would face resistance. So He told him in Jeremiah 1:8:
“Do not be afraid of their faces, for I am with you to deliver you,” says the Lord. (NKJV)
In other words, don’t let their reactions stop your obedience. When we’re more concerned with people’s approval than God’s instruction, we miss out on living fully in our calling. And Jesus made it even more plain in Matthew 10:28 when He said:
“Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” (ESV)
When you truly fear God, meaning you deeply reverence and honor Him, your focus shifts. You’re no longer distracted by people’s disapproval, because your heart is set on obeying the One who matters most.
Now let’s be clear: this doesn’t mean being harsh or dismissive toward people. If you love God, you will love people. But loving people doesn’t mean pleasing them at all costs. That’s not real love—that’s performance. That’s fear dressed up in kindness. And most of the time, people-pleasing isn’t even about them—it’s about you, needing to feel liked, safe, or validated.
Jesus didn’t call us to make everyone happy. He called us to love Him first and then others.
But sometimes we get it backwards and think that loving people first somehow proves our love for God. But loving God first is what actually teaches us how to love people well. So don’t fear people. Fear God, follow Him, and trust that when your heart is aligned with His, your love for others will flow in truth—not fear.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, please help me keep my eyes on You and not be distracted by the opinions of others. Teach me to love people with Your truth and grace, but to live to please You first. Let my heart be fully surrendered to You, and not swayed by fear. In Jesus Christ’s Name, I pray, Amen.
