Day 20: A Humble Sacrifice
Reading: Luke 2:21-24
In accordance with Israelite tradition for firstborn sons, Jesus is circumcised and presented to the Lord in the temple at Jerusalem. Mary and Joseph offered a sacrifice of two young pigeons. Luke 2:24 tells us they offered “a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” (Luke 2:24 ESV)
A lamb would normally be offered; however, when a lamb could not be afforded, two small birds would be accepted. Mary and Joseph’s sacrificial offering shows the poor and humble beginnings Jesus was born into. Although their sacrifice was small, Jesus would go on to offer the ultimate sacrifice once and for all.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for giving Your Son as the ultimate sacrifice for my sins. I come to You poor in spirit and thank You for making me rich through Your Son. In Jesus Christ’s Name, I pray, Amen.
