The sword of the Spirit is the only offensive weapon we have, and it’s the only one that we need. Hebrews 4:12 says:
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12 ESV)
The Word of God is called sharper than a double-edged sword. (Hebrews 4:12) On one side it protects, and on the other side, it cuts down our enemy.
In any combat, you don’t just take a weapon to battle for style. You better have every intention of using it. If you don’t, your enemy surely will.
So, we use this weapon best, by not only reading and studying scripture, but actually living it out. That is where the real power comes from. The enemy doesn’t care how much you read the Bible or study scripture, as long as you don’t practice what it says. The enemy too, knows the Word. He used the Word of God against Jesus when tempting Jesus in the wilderness, (Matthew 4:1-11) and he’ll use it against us as well. Studying and knowing scripture is how we pick up our sword of the Spirit, but living what it says is how we use it to harm our enemy.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the power of your Word. Please empower and help me to not only know your Word, but to live it. In Jesus Christ’s Name, I pray, Amen.
