My most popular Instagram post starts with the words:  “Bible Study is self-care.” If we’re not careful, we can often look at Bible study as one more thing to check off our to-do list, but I’ve found that Bible study is not what we do for God; it’s what we do with God. In Matthew 4:4, Jesus says:

“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4 ESV)

Bible study is not another obligation we need to worry about doing but the very lifeline our souls need to flourish.

  • The Bible tells us that God’s Word is living and active (Hebrews 4:12), ready to speak a timely word to our inner being and grant us direction for our lives (Psalm 119:105).
  • Jesus tells us like our bodies need food, God’s Word provides our souls with the spiritual nourishment we need to thrive.
  • The Apostle Paul called God’s word the “Sword of the Spirit” (Ephesians 6:17), which gives us victory over all spiritual warfare.

The scriptures direct, feed, and protect our souls, and Bible study is an important way to activate the power of God’s Word in our lives. Today, I encourage you to begin to study God’s Word with a fresh perspective and allow it to nourish your soul.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for Your word that is living and active and gives me wisdom for my life. Please help me to view bible study not as an obligation, but as an opportunity to grow closer with You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
