September 1 • When God Closes a Door

When I left my job at the Department of State to stay home with my daughter, I didn’t think being a stay-at-home mom was a season I would stay in for an extended amount of time. When I started to look for jobs, every door shut in my face. Opportunities I knew I was qualified for, or more than qualified for, were rejecting my applications. I wasn’t even getting that many interviews. As I settled down from my search to seek God about the matter, He revealed that the transition to being a stay-at-home mom was long-term, and my season of traditional work was over for the time being.

I was reminded of Jonah, whom God called to preach to the Ninevites, but decided to go in another direction. You may have heard the story in Sunday school. Every step he took out of alignment to God’s will was met with opposition and consequences until a huge fish swallowed him. Don’t get me wrong, opposition and closed doors don’t always mean we shouldn’t go in that direction but sometimes, God will use those closed doors to push you in a new direction. Areas where you once had favor, He will remove to adjust your path toward His final will. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us:

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11 ESV)

Today, I encourage you to trust that God still has a plan for your life, even when he closes a door.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that You still have amazing plans for my life. When one door closes, continue to strengthen and encourage me when I’m confused or discouraged. Thank You for Your Word that guides me. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
